How To Handle A Grievance UK
Mishandled grievances are the second-largest source of UK tribunal claims after unfair dismissal. The ACAS Code is your shield.
The Steps
- 1
Receive the grievance in writing
Acknowledge within 5 working days. Confirm the grievance handler (a manager not involved in the issue).
- 2
Investigate
Interview the complainant, alleged parties, witnesses. Gather documents. Keep notes.
- 3
Hold a grievance hearing
Employee has the statutory right to be accompanied. Let them present their case fully and propose remedies.
- 4
Issue written outcome
Within 5 working days of the hearing. State decision, reasons, any actions to be taken, and right of appeal.
- 5
Hear any appeal
By a more senior, uninvolved manager. Their decision is final internally.
- 6
Implement actions and review
Mediate, train, restructure or discipline as required. Follow up at 30 days to confirm the situation has improved.
