How To Prepare For ISO 9001 Certification

The Steps

Define the scope
Which parts of the business will be certified? Include all locations and processes that touch the customer. Narrower scope = easier first audit.

Map your core processes
Document Sales, Operations, Procurement, HR, and Customer Service as flowcharts. Auditors look for evidence you understand how work flows.

Conduct a context analysis
List interested parties (customers, regulators, staff, suppliers). Document your SWOT. Required by Clause 4.

Set quality objectives
SMART objectives linked to business strategy. Reviewed quarterly with metrics.

Build a controlled document register
Every policy, procedure, form and template logged with version, owner, review date. This is where most SMEs fail their first audit.

Run an internal audit
Audit every clause against actual practice. Log non-conformities. Close them out before stage 1.

Hold a management review
Documented meeting covering: audit results, customer feedback, objective performance, resource needs, opportunities for improvement.

Book stage 1 and stage 2 audits
Stage 1 is a documentation review. Stage 2 is the on-site audit. Use a UKAS-accredited certification body.
